Explorers' Motives

I believe that the explorers of the fifteenth and sixteenth century had many different motives to explore new worlds.
First off, the main motive of exploration, in my opinion was conquest. Most exploration ships would carry with them cannons, and hand-held items, suggesting that they either prepared for, or came with the intent for a war or battle. Regardless, these items where brought every time. Also, in shipwrecks we have found medals that where given to sailors for courage and bravery. Usually, these qualities are best expressing in a chaotic time such as a battle or ambush, again suggesting hostile actions or intentions.
Next, we have trade. Trade was defiantly a major motive for exploration as well. Coins, Foods such as pineapple and corn, gold ornaments, and horses, are all items that where commonly found on ships returning from explorations. Because coins are a type of currency which is used for trading it suggests that the sailors were intending on buying goods. Back then, Horses where only found in Eurasia and where brought to the new world by sailors. Although they were first used as a mode of transportation, they where also traded for local items. Finally, foods such as corn and pineapple, or gold and precious items all came from the central and southern parts of the Americas, therefore we can clearly see that the European sailors did in fact trade on their explorations.
Another motivation for exploration was most likely mapping the world. Explorers in the 1400s-1500s had a goal to map the entire world once they knew it was flat and did not fear falling off the edge. There is even physical evidence that suggests that this is true. First of all, there are many measuring tools, such as compasses and astrolabes, along with incomplete maps, found in the ruins of ships. These items are an indication that the sailors upgraded their old maps on their voyage. Also, horses that where found on ships where used as a way to cross large areas at a much faster pace, thereby helping the explorers map important places faster.

The Scientific Method

The scientific method , is a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge. It was developed over many years, and is still being used today. The method also has many steps;
Steps:
1.Ask a Question- Before you start anything, you must figure out exactly what you are trying to discover or answer; i.e How are we able to stand on the Earth, if it is round?
2.Do Background Research- Find out everything there is to know about the topic that you are questioning. This will help you create your hypothesis, determine your variables, and set-up a procedure.
3.Construct Hypothesis- Once you have all the knowledge, you can now give you best guess on what the answer to your initial question will be, supported by facts from your research.
4.Test with an Experiment- When you have written your educated guess, or hypothesis, you can now create an experiment that will answer, and hopefully prove your guess valid.
5. Analyze Results, Draw Conclusion- Once all of your data is recovered, you must analyze it, and decide weather or not your hypothesis was correct.
6a.Hypothesis is True- If your hypothesis is true, you can move onto the next step in the process.
6b.Hypothesis is False, or Partially Correct- If your data is questionable, then you must go back to step 3, (Construct Hypothesis) and do the test over and over, until your data suggests that your hypothesis is correct.
7.Report Results- Once your data, and analysis are satisfactory, you may present them to the public. If others are able to reconstruct your experiment and come up with the same results, your hypothesis eventually becomes a theory. Again, if your theory proves to be consistent, then it is possible that the theory becomes a law, like Newton's Laws of Motion.

This method was created in the late 1600s, an is still used by all scientists today, why? Til this day, no one is able to detect a flaw in the method, that could make all of the data questionable, because it demands that the experiment is done over and over by various people before it can become a theory, then no one can pass fake data, since no one would be able to replicate the results. Also, not only are there no flaws, none of the laws determined by the method, where proven wrong, proving, that it is a reliable method indeed.

I believe that what Albert Einstein is tying to imply when stating; "No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong." is that no matter how many experiments are consistent with his hypothesis there will always be people opposing it; on the other hand, if you get just one inconsistent result, everyone will abandon your theory.
I agree with Einstein, because no one whats to change their view or be proven wrong, but 90%, want others to mess up so that they can be mocked. For example, when going to do a project, people can find some good aspects of your presentation, but they will always realize mistakes such as grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and validity of content. This also applies to speakers, or any type of performer.
Not only do I agree with him on a personal level, but I also trust Einstein's Judgment considering his intellect. Albert Einstein was a German who had an abnormally great intelligence level.

Martin Luther - Hero or Heretic?

In my opinion, Martin Luther was a heretic. I am not saying that because it was the side that I was given in the debate, but because of all the present facts.

Although Martin Luther was seen as a hero in the eyes of many common people of the time, he used reverse psychology, and deception to place this thought into the mind of the public. People may argue that Luther started up revolts that helped free the people; however, in reality, he sent hundreds, of thousands of innocent people to slaughter. Also, after urging the peasants to revolt, he publishes a book, and gives statements about how the peasants are not being holy, not following God's plan, and that they should be killed for their actions; the actions that he started in the first place. The other, and perhaps biggest argument on why Luther is a hero, is that he freed the people from the Church's teachings by allowing them to interpret the bible by themselves. Yet, if you examine the details, and facts, you realize, that in a way he was just like the Catholic Church. This is because Luther removed parts of the New Testament that where inconsistent with his views. He also manipulated translations by adding words to the Bible in order to clarify it, or in other words, to clarify his interpretation. Another point is that he preached the correct way of gaining salvation, how to run the church, who should run the church, etc.

Now, if we look even deeper, into Luther's way of gaining salvation, we see yet another action that contrasts with his teachings. Luther is trying to put his interpretation of the bible, and the Christian faith into the community. He states that you should not use the interpretation of the bible from others, but rather use your own. He also states that there is no need for Church officials, or any other people that work solely for the Church, such as monks, and saints. Now, he is telling the public that they should not listen to the Pope’s interpretation, who is a Church official; but they should listen to St. Paul’s, who was a missionary. Why is the Pope’s interpretation incorrect were the missionary’s is the True? Shouldn't the people get to choose their own interpretation of salvation? Who is he to decide what is right and wrong?

Finally, the greatest reason why he was not a hero but rather a heretic is an undeniable fact. Martin Luther was an exact example of a heretic based on the definition of the world. A heretic was someone who disagreed or challenged Church teachings. Luther, preached his own ideas, revolted rebelled against the corruption of the church, and converted people to Lutherism, and away from Catholicism.

"The Spark for the Reformation: Indulgences" vs. "Justification by Faith"

Compare/contrast Johann Tetzel's "The Spark for the Reformation: Indulgences" withMartin Luther's "Justification by Faith" include at least one quote from each primary sourceusing MLA citation format.

John Tetzel, like all Catholics of his time, believed that God was a harsh Judge that punished people for all their sins. You are doomed no matter what you do because all humans sin; weather with actions, words, or thoughts. He also states that for every sin, no mater how small, you will spend 7 years in purgatory. Because the Church gave an evil image of God, they where able to scare the public into buying indulgences, and paying taxes to the Church to please him. He claimed that buying an indulgence results in, "an immortal soul, safe and sound into the land of paradise."
Martin Luther however, believe that God forgave all Christians if they had faith, they would earn salvation. He believes that God a loving person that does not expect you to waste your human life serving him through the Church. He sums this up in one sentence saying "I grasped that the justice of God is righteousness by which through grace and sheer mercy God justifies us through faith."

I think that the quote "Blood moves the wheels of history" by Martin Luther, is stating that only through wars, does history, and society move back and forth. I agree with this quote, however not entirely. I, personally believe that wars do, in fact move society, and history, however it does not always move it forward.
In some cases, it does move forward such as when the Roman Empire spread across Europe, and thus, spreading their ideas, discoveries, and teachings. Rome had to battle against many different barbaric tribes, and much blood was shed; however, in the end life in Europe progressed, and by its side, so did history.
There are however, many cases in which wars do not move the wheels forward, but rather in reverse. For example, World War II was a devastating series of battles, and involved brutal man slaughter, and in the end, the war put back Europe's progress because of the need to build new buildings, the population had to balance out, and radioactive sites had to cool off. This was an enormous set-back in history.
Although I agree with this quote, I also do not believe that Blood ALONE moves the wheels of history. I also believe that there are other events that occur, and change history, pushing it forward, as well as pulling it back. For example, many scientific discoveries, and inventions, such as that of the space shuttle, where not violent, yet showed a progress in history. Also,there where some incorrect, and harmless discoveries, such as one that stated that cold was an element, and, when extracted from a substance, the substance would warm up. This sent history forward at the time, but brought it right back years later after the theory had been dis-proven. I would agree with one of my classmate's statments; "If I were to revise this quote I would say 'Blood and Innovation Move the Wheels of History'."

The Sale of Grade Points

When Mrs. Moore presented us with the ISB indulgences I was exited about it because I thought that you could use it to partially improve a score. However, When she told us it could raise entire points, as well as on the final exams, and that it cost 1,000 rsd per ticket; I started to question it. First, I started to believe that it was fake because of the high price, and ability to fix mid-terms. I also stated to think that it would be an unfair advantage to the richer students, because they could have the best grades, and do none of the work. I believe that the school could sell indulgences, but not to gain whole grade points. I believe that if you have a good excuse for not doing a minor piece of homework such a worksheet, you should be able to get out of it; but, you would be given a small amount of purchases. Furthermore, I do not believe that you should be allowed to buy whole grade points, as many times as you want because of two reasons. The first reason is, that rich people would have an unfair advantage. For example, if one student has better grades based on their work, then it would not be fair for an underachiever to be able to buy a higher grade than the hard worker. Also, it would be like robing the students family, as well as allowing them to not do their work, and this would catch up with them in the future.
This "trick" is parallel to the corrupted church because they are both selling advantages to people who can afford it thus increasing their wealth, and the customers power.
